Qype Does Wicklow

My mum is from Wicklow. Fact. As a child I was dragged around places of then almost zero interest that now as I grow rapidly older I reminisce about in floods of nostalgia that would even make Cilla Black proud. If you’re in Dublin and have time and a car, then it’s most definitely worth venturing south to this delightfully green and scenic part of the Emerald Isle’s eastern coast.

So: Powerscourt Waterfall when I was eight was about as boring as girls were then and how both have changed, eh fellas? On the former, I sit and wonder at the mystery of nature, the gravitational pull of the water as it splashes against the rocks and try and wangle in a metaphor relating to my life’s journey. Or I stuff myself senseless with a picnic on the stunning grounds.

Glendalough. Now, that was nowhere near to making the list of things I wanted to be doing as a feisty teenaged lad, but this charming corner of the Wicklow Mountains, at the foot of a breathtakingly scenic drive, is awash with lakes, woodland walks and hikes, ancient Celtic temples, a host of artisan-style shops and the same little gift shop that has been there for decades.

I remember my mum ignoring a local’s indecipherable warnings not to drive through Sally Gap one rather foggy evening, but thankfully we lived to survive her recklessness and still to this day I am uncertain as to which bit is actually the gap. And who is or was Sally. It’s pretty captivating and expansive rugged terrain though and there’s an excellent, if rather windy, viewing area to take in the majestic panorama of the bogs.

Heading back towards the city, Johnnie Fox’s is a craichead’s dream. Although this lively boozer is exceptionally tourist-heavy and perennially busy, they serve damn find Irish pub food, there’s all sorts of musical entertainment every evening and as it’s the highest pub in the country, it demands a visit. And be sure to keep an eye out for their Hooley Nights, to be sure.

Qype Does Ireland: Burgers For Obama

In honour of President Obama’s visit to the Emerald Isle, we thought we’d provide a round-up of the best burger bars in Ireland – just in case he needs a little taste of American-inspired cuisine whilst he’s here.

Dublin

For a burger joint where you can eat and party, Jo Burger is the place to go. This bustling burger bar is open ’til late with DJs spinning tunes every night of the week. Get ready to make new friends as you’ll be sat at canteen-style tables with benches and, if you’re feeling brave, why not give the Bari burger a go? This beaut is made with bush peach curry sauce and Emmenthal cheese.

If you’re looking for the authentic diner experience, grab one of the cowhide seats in Bobo’s burger bar on Wexford Street in Dublin. As well as three great veggie options, Bobo’s serves up a selection of wonderfully inventive burgers. For a taste sensation, get your chops round The Applewood – a prime juicy beef and pork burger with bacon, smoked Applewood cheese, lettuce and Bobo’s special apple relish.

Belfast

Moving away from Dublin, Wolfe’s Gourmet Burger has caused quite a stir in Belfast. Wolfe’s burger buns are freshly baked and they make their burgers by hand every day from 100% Northern Irish beef. If you fancy a change from beef, order one of their many chicken burgers and wash it down with a luxury strawberry milkshake made from fresh strawberries.

Galway

Finally, if you want to be able to build your own burger, pay a visit to Boogaloo Burger and Steakhouse on Lower Abbeygate Street in Galway. Here, you can choose from beef, chicken or lamb and decide whether to have it in a bun, wrap or naan. All the Boogaloo burger ingredients are prepared in-house and they even make their own (tasty!) tomato ketchup from scratch.

So does this lot send you to burger heaven, or do you think we missed out somewhere even better? Let us know in the comments below!
