Qypetition Time: Win a Night of Dinner and Cabaret at La Rêve!

This week we’ve got a stupendous prize for one lucky winner and their friend: a night out for 2 at La Rêve in London’s sumptuous Cafe de Paris.

La Rêve combines burlesque, vaudeville, circus and cabaret variety performers and no two shows are the same. I recently paid a visit to the fabulous La Rêve and can testify to its fabulousness.

On my visit, Dusty Limits was our hilariously raunchy and acid-tongued compère and he did more than an adequate job of warming up the lively Friday audience. My stomach hurt from laughing as he smoothly improvised and propositioned several members of the audience (I escaped his attentions much to my disappointment).

Burlesque performers included my personal favourite Kitty Bang Bang, who succeeded in getting “Japanese Boy” stuck in my head for days and wowed with her flawless en pointe routine. Such admirable toe strength. We were also treated to some impressive hula-hooping courtesy of Pippa the Ripper. The Lords of Strut had a shaky start. As two crazily-dressed Irish guys, I began to fear for another Jedward. Fortunately, they redeemed themselves with flawless acrobatics and amusing banter while Miraculous Val’s aerial acrobatic show made me wonder what was possible with bed sheets and a ceiling hook…

Ultimately, the show was stolen by the hilarious Frisky and Mannish. Their pop-fuelled routine will win over even the most hardcore dance fanatics as the audience became inconsolable with laughter to their version of Kelly Clarkson’s “What doesn’t kill you” and an uncanny Florence and the Machine impersonation.

An amazing night’s entertainment was had and this week’s winner is in for a spectacular treat.

Hurrah for the Jubilee Weekend! Here are our top 10 ways to celebrate:

In the words of Henry Holland, “I’m so excited I could wee, it’s the Queen’s Jubilee!”

We’re gearing up for 4 days of Pimm’s, tea, cake, bunting and other various clichés. With so much happening and only 100 hours to cram it all in, we thought a little “Top 10 List of Jubilee-tastic Events“ would come in ever-so-useful.

So here they are in no particular order:

1. Head to Kona Kai tonight and feel like a Polynesian princess for an evening. All ladies are treated to free tiaras and leis. Think Kate Middleton goes to Maui. You also get a hula lesson.

2. Accidental Festival 2012 is the product of taking 21 young producers and giving them 4 days in the Roundhouse to programme whatever they want. Intrigued? You should be.

3. Who wears lots of ballgowns? Royalty, that’s who. See lots of lovely ones all weekend at Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 at the V & A.

4. Head to The Hoxton Pony tonight where cool kids prove that one need not have a stiff upper lip to enjoy the Jubilee festivities. Fun stuff includes free manicures, hula hoopers and make-up (and music and visuals obviously).

5. Shaka Zulu is hosting a Diamond Jubilee party this evening. Expect impersonators and giveaways.

6. You know how the Queen’s face is everywhere at the moment? How everything suddenly has a Jubilee theme? Including this blog post? The Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising is dedicating a whole exhibition to this kind of thing. Pop along to see souvenirs and commemorative products made to mark the royal jubilees of the past.

7. FREE CAKE will be available tomorrow afternoon at Cake, Rattle and Roll, a shopping and eating extravaganza at the Newburgh Quarter.

8. From tomorrow til Tuesday, Proud Camden are hosting a massive, free 4 day festival featuring the best of British live music called Jubilee Jam Festival.

9. Assuming you’re not partied out on Sunday, The Book Club will be having a crackin’ knees-up of a street party which will feature the Guilty Pleasures DJs, in an unashamed, glorious celebration of all things pop.

10. Food, drink including shellfish and commemorative ales will grace the street outside the Water Poet for their Diamond Jubilee Street Party. Grab a flag and hold on to your crown…

Got another event you want to tell us about?

‘That Sh*t Cr_ay!’: Jay – Z and Kanye West @ The O2

Monday 21 May was a day to remember, as my twin sister and I were off to see her birthday present – Jay – Z and Kanye West’s – Watch The Throne Concert at the O2. For a past birthday present, I had bought her tickets to see Rihanna, since she’s a massive fan, but more for their shared passion for style. However, I had a feeling that I had surpassed myself since we both had high expectations about the evening ahead.

Once we left North Greenwich station, we were met with hoards of fans and surprisingly bumped into uni friends and past and present work mates, as well as knowing other people that were going on different dates. With such a hyped atmosphere, how much more amplified was it going to be inside?

At 8:30 pm, it was SHOWTIME! As soon as the music started booming and the rappers came to the stage, everybody stood to attention and danced the night away until the very end. To the fans’ delight, there were also cube shaped stages, that rose up high, whilst Kanye and Jay – Z alternated between them. As an extra bonus to where we were seated, we had a close view to the cubed platform to our right. Whenever they looked over, we made sure we waved our arms – too bad it didn’t catch their attention though.

The crowd had the privilege to hear songs from the Watch The Throne album, plus tunes from each of their solo collections. It was great to hear past songs that you hadn’t heard in a while, especially since some made you want to dance even harder and repeatedly made you say “Oh yeaaaah!” in a chorus of remembrance.

But it was a current song and arguably the anthem to their present album, that really got the crowd going. Saving the best until last, Kanye and Jay – Z performed N!**@s In Paris! We were lucky enough to hear it three times in a row before both said goodbye for the night. However 99% of fans felt that this couldn’t be the end. And we were proved right when both re – entered the stage and Jay – Z shouted “again”! That was meet with a loud cheer and everyone rapping to the chorus ‘That Sh*t Cr_ay’, as they performed the song twice more.

It’s funny how they abbreviated the word ‘crazy’ – but the phrase definitely has a ring to it. Once the concert finally finished, my sister and I could only explain the event as ‘That Sh*t Cr_ay!’
