Qype Does Edinburgh: Best places to take your brood!

With all this Glasweigian Brangelina hoo-haa that’s hit Scotland recently I have decided, should Brad and Angelina pop down to Edinburgh for the day we here at Qype should put together a list of family friendly places they could take their mini ‘linas whilst visiting our glorious city. So here it is – our best for the brood inspired places in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is a surprisingly baby friendly place to visit with some bars even having an area for babies with toys such as Joseph Pearce, a fab little bar on Leith Walk. There’s also The Orchard in Canonmills who welcome children in the dining area until 8pm and Elbow who are suprisingly accomodating.

For coffee and cake there are also plenty of places in Edinburgh that cater to the needs of little ones, some even including soft play areas at the back such as Cafe Montagu or have mum and baby sessions such as Loopy Lorna’s in Morningside, an Edinburgh institution. Water of Leith Cafe has the best baby changing facilities I’ve ever seen!

There’s also places like Mimi’s Bakehouse or Cuckoo Bakery, Porto and Fi and the newly opened Berit’s and Brown who are more than happy to cater for the average baby or toddler. La Favourita even has a children’s entertainer on a Sunday afternoon to keep them distracted while you scoff down your gnocchi.

But what to do now that you’ve fed and watered the little tykes? Edinburgh Zoo has the most amazing monkey enclosure ever (which has recently been remodelled) and is bound to keep the kids running around like loons for at least a couple of hours. Their penguin enclosure is pretty awesome too, with regular shows and feeding!

For something a little more subdued there’s always Doodles Ceramics for those little Leonardo Da Vinci’s waiting to pop out. Or for some outdoor fun, the Royal Botanic Gardens always has a multitude of activities for the youngsters – especially during school holidays.

For something a little more educational there’s the newly re-opened National Museum or take them along to the Museum of Childhood to remind them that toys didn’t always require batteries!

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy there are a million shows and acitivities aimed at children and babies at our Edinburgh International Fringe Festival running till the end of August. As well as our International Book Festival. Who knows, you might even see a celebrity or two?

Qype Does Edinburgh: Festival Food for the Fringe

So last week we focused on what to do during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this week we’d like to give you a heads-up on where are the best places to eat and drink during festival time.

Having lived in Edinburgh for the past five and a half years, you become immune to its charms after a while and tend to focus more on our rainy weather. But come festival time its beauty becomes more apparent as you watch tourists taking photos of everything and wandering up and down the Royal Mile taking in the culture our city has to offer.

What isn’t so fantastic (and a consequence of a city over-run with tourists at this time of year) is trying to find somewhere that’s not jam-packed to the rafters for a coffee or a bite to eat before and after fringe shows. Or being a tourist, not knowing where to go for good food and drink that won’t break the bank. So here at Qype we thought we would give you a rundown of a couple of the city’s hidden gems – open later during festival season.

The Edinburgh Larder is situated in exactly the right spot to catch a bite to eat between shows or before taking your chances at the Military Tattoo. Situated on Blackfriars Street, just off the Royal Mile, it’s open for lunch and dinner too during festival season. Friendly staff, fantastic coffee and cake – the brownies are a must. Possibly, the best I’ve ever had. As well as a full menu for lunch and dinner. Did I mentioned they have a fab selection of beers and ciders? They also do the most AMAZING cheeses and their homemade pumpkin chutney will make you want to sell your own grandmother to get your hands on it! Seriously! A real gem and I have to say my absolute pick for dining during the festival.

Speaking of cake, Cuckoo’s Bakery in new town have opened until 7pm during the festival. It’s quaint, it’s cute and they even have a cuckoo clock that chimes on the hour. Plus the best cupcakes in Edinburgh, displayed in a glass cabinet as you walk in, with different specials every day! They even do a Guinness Cupcake, but my pick is definitely the Peanut Butter. I dare you to choose just one! Gorgeous sandwiches as well and really lovely staff.

Dovecot Studios is home to not only art, but also one of the best cafes in Edinburgh – in my humble opinion, Stag Espresso. Again situated perfectly for Fringe time (just a five minute walk from The Pleasance) their lunch menu is really fresh and quite a healthy selection, again the cakes are divine and the coffee is perfect. A good stop off place – quiet, friendly and phenomenal sandwiches.

Head back to new town to Treacle, one of my favourite bars in Edinburgh (mostly for the food). I bang on about this place quite a lot, but it’s one of the only places in Edinburgh that you can actually book tables at during festival time. Fab selection of burgers, homemade rustic pies – gorgeous! And the best prawn noodles I’ve ever had! It does tend to get quite busy as they have an extensive cocktail list as well. But it’s one of the best casual places to eat in Edinburgh.

Honourable mentions should also go to Porto & Fi on The Mound and the Holyrood 9A for their convenient locations, plus their ability to deal with groups, both with good quality food and low prices.

So there you have it! An insider’s pick of the top tables in Edinburgh during the Fringe. Just don’t tell anyone or we will never get a table….
